Tips on the Use of Ice for Sprains

Ice treatments can be composed of ice packs, ice massages, or ice slush baths.

If you want to use ice packs, use crushed ice to partly fill a plastic bag. Wrap a thin and wet cloth around the injury. Put the ice pack over this and wrap on elastic bandage around the ice pack in order to hold it in place.

For ice massages, you need to freeze water in four to eight ounce Styrofoam cups. The cup’s top part must be torn away from the ice. Hold the covered end and then rub the ice slowly over the injured area using a circular motion. Avoid holding the ice on a single spot for over thirty minutes. And to use ice slush baths, fill a big bucket with ice and water. Put the ankle in the bucket until the skin gets numb.

When to Take Part in Physical Activities Again

Athletes may have to wait for several weeks before they can return to their sports again, depending on the severity of their injury and the sport they take part in. And as they engage in sports again, they may have to keep their ankle wrapped or braced for protection and support.

But you can take part in ordinary activities like running, walking, or biking right away if the activity doesn’t cause any pain. However, you will have to stay away from twisting and pivoting for two to three weeks.
